1. 어원(語原)이란??
어원( Etymology)은 한마디로 단어생성의 기원입니다.
영어 어휘는 크게 앵글로색슨 계통의 단어와
라틴, 희랍 계통의 단어로 대별할 수 있습니다.
앵글로 색슨계통의 단어가 원래 영어의 조상이고
라틴, 희랍계통의 단어는 빌려온 외국어라고 보시면 됩니다.
영어,프랑스어, 독일어 등에서 비스한 스펠링을 가진 단어들이
많은 이유가 한 어원에서 출발한 단어이기 때문입니다.
즉, 우리나라말도 순수 우리말이 있고 한자로 된 말이 있듯이
라틴, 희랍계통은 영어의 한자라고 보시면 됩니다.
우리말에도 순수 우리말보다 한자가 차지하는 비중이 더욱
크듯이 영어단어도 라틴,희랍계통의 단어가 더욱 많은 비중을
차지합니다.
앵글로 색슨계통의 단어는 주로 구어(화화에서 사용하는)로 사용되고
라틴, 희랍계통의 단어는 학술이나, 문헌에 주로 사용되는 것입니다.
우리가 유식하게 보이려고 할때 한자를 쓰듯이
영어에서도 약간 유식하게 보이기 위해서 라틴, 희랍게통의 단어를 사용합니다.
앵글로 색슨계통의 단어는 어원분석이 안되는 단어가 대부분이며
주로 어원으로 접근하는 단어는 라틴, 희랍계통의
단어입니다.
2. 단어의 구성
어원으로 분석이 가능한 단어는 다음과 같은 요소로서 구성됩니다.
1.접두어+ 어근+ 접미어
2.접두어+어근
3.어근+ 접미어
4.어근
5.어근+어근
*접두어: 단어의 구성요소소 제일앞에 위치하는 형태소로서
주로 단어의 뜻을 강조하는 역할 또는 뜻을 변형하는 역할
ex) ab, ad, re, sub, in, mal 등등
* 접미어: 단어의 꼬리에 붙어 품사를 결정하거나 뜻을 강화시켜 주는 역할
ex) able, ment, tion, ous 등등
* 어근: 단어의 가장 중심적인 뜻을 같는 핵으로서 어근이 없는 단어는 있을 수
없습니다.
3. 어원학습의 장점
어원으로 어휘를 학습할때 가지는 장점은
1) 한 어근을 익힘으로써 많게는 수십개의 단어를 한꺼번에 익힐 수 있다.
2) 한꺼번에 유사어원의 단어를 익힘으로써 암기의 효과가 오래간다.
3) 대분분의 어원이 쉬운단어를 하나씩은 가지고 있기 때문에 이를 기본으로
같은 어원의 단어를 확장해 나가면 단어 암기가 매우 쉬워진다.
4) 낯설은 단어를 보아도 많은 어원을 알고 있으면 대강의 의미를 유추할 수 있다.
5) 단어의 정확한 스펠링의 암기가 용이하다.(어원으로 조합된 단어를 분석해서 공부하기
때문)
4. 어원학습의 순서
어원학습은 먼저 접두어, 접미어 뜻부터 알고 시작해야 합니다.
대부분의 단어들이 접두어, 접미어를 포함하는 단어이니
먼저 접두어,접미어 뜻을 정확히 파악한 후 개별적 어근에 접근하는 것이 순서입니다.
